Yuki-no-Ma雪の間
A 200-year-old home buried in the snowfields of Niigata. Irori hearth, hand-hewn beams, and a silence that only winter can produce. The house sits at the edge of a rice-farming village, surrounded by fields that become a white sea from December through March.
The Story of This Home
Built in the early Meiji era, Yuki-no-Ma was home to a farming family for five generations before the last heir moved to Tokyo in 1998. The house sat empty for over two decades, slowly disappearing beneath the snow. We found it in 2023 — the irori hearth still intact, the hand-hewn beams still true. A local carpenter from Ojiya spent eight months restoring every joint by hand.
