Guest Standards

Respect Comes First.

Hikari Stays is not for every traveler. It is for travelers who want to understand, respect, and learn from rural Japan.

Why Standards Matter

These are homes in living communities.

Japan's rural villages are not tourist attractions. They are living communities with their own rhythms, relationships, and expectations. Guests are invited visitors to these communities. They are expected to behave accordingly.

Our guest standards are not about exclusivity. They are about responsibility to the communities in which we offer stays.

The Standards

What we expect.

No parties or disruptive events

These homes are in real communities with real neighbors. Parties, loud gatherings, and disruptive events are not permitted under any circumstances.

Quiet hours

Quiet hours will be clearly defined for each property and must be respected. Rural villages have early rhythms. Guests are expected to match them.

Trash sorting and disposal

Japan's rural trash rules are strict and vary by municipality. Guests will receive detailed instructions and are expected to follow them precisely.

Respect for neighbors

Neighbors are not part of the guest experience. They are residents of a community. Guests must be considerate of noise, parking, movement, and any interaction.

No unauthorized guests

Only the guests listed in the stay request may occupy the property. Unauthorized visitors are not permitted.

No smoking unless specifically allowed

Smoking is prohibited inside all properties and in any area that could affect the home, garden, or neighbors, unless the property listing specifically states otherwise.

Care for tatami, shoji, woodwork, gardens, fixtures, and tools

Traditional Japanese homes contain materials and features that require specific care. Guests will receive detailed guidance and are expected to follow it.

Parking rules

Rural roads are often narrow. Parking must be in designated areas only. Blocking roads, driveways, or neighbor access is not acceptable.

Security deposit required

A security deposit will be required for all stays. The amount will be specified per property. Deposits are returned after checkout inspection.

Damage reporting

Any accidental damage must be reported to the local caretaker immediately. Attempting to conceal damage is grounds for forfeiture of the security deposit.

Rural etiquette and cultural respect

Guests will receive a cultural orientation before arrival. Understanding and respecting local customs, seasonal practices, and community norms is expected.

Emergency process

Each property will have a clear emergency contact process. Guests must familiarize themselves with it before their stay begins.

"These will not be anonymous vacation rentals. They will be restored homes in living communities."
