How It Works
How Future Stays Will Work.
The Hikari Stays model is not a simple short-term rental operation. It is a carefully designed relationship between communities, properties, and guests.
Finding the Homes
Finding akiya is not an internet search. It is relationship-building with rural communities. Our model is designed to work with local municipalities, regional real estate agents, community members, and other local partners. These relationships are planned, not yet established.
We are not looking for any empty house. We are looking for homes with history, architectural integrity, and a relationship to the local community.
Restoring the Home
Restoration is not renovation. We honor the soul of the house. Original materials are preserved wherever possible. Local craftspeople work with traditional techniques. Nothing is made generic.
Our restoration philosophy is restraint. We add what is necessary for guest comfort. We add nothing that diminishes the character of the home.
"The wrong restoration is worse than no restoration."
Vetting the Guests
Hikari Stays will not accept every booking request. This is not about exclusivity. It is about ensuring that every person who stays in one of these homes understands and respects what they are entering.
The guest vetting process will include a short description of travel intent, confirmation of understanding of rural Japanese culture, and agreement to the rules and expectations of the home.
We do not plan to use instant booking during the early launch phase.
How Future Stays Will Work
The Stay
Each stay will include local guidance, cultural education for guests, and support from a local caretaker. Guests will receive a detailed guidebook about the history of the home, the local community, and the surrounding area.
This is not a hotel. This is not a performance. It is a quieter way to experience rural Japan, with care and respect.
