September — November
Crimson maples and harvest silence
Autumn is, for many, the finest season in rural Japan. The rice harvest turns the paddies gold before the stalks are cut and bundled. Then the maples ignite — first at altitude, then cascading down through the valleys in waves of crimson, amber, and rust. The light is low and golden. The air is sharp and clean. Evenings call for the irori hearth, sake warmed in a tokkuri, and the particular silence of a countryside preparing for winter.
