Is Hikari Stays budget lodging?

No. Hikari Stays is not budget lodging or hostel-style accommodation. The homes are thoughtfully restored private countryside stays with transparent pricing, cultural depth, and optional hosted experiences. Pricing is property-specific and generally comparable to a quality boutique hotel stay.

Are the homes luxury properties?

Hikari Stays is not luxury for luxury's sake. The homes are designed to feel comfortable, private, tasteful, and rooted in place. The goal is an attainable boutique stay experience — thoughtfully restored, well-appointed, and culturally respectful — rather than an ultra-luxury villa model.

Can we bring extra guests beyond the listed capacity?

Accepted Answer

Each home has a firm maximum guest capacity based on comfort, safety, bedding, utilities, and respect for the surrounding community. Extra unregistered guests are not permitted. Limited exceptions may be considered for young children using an approved sleeping arrangement such as a crib or futon — please inquire when booking.

Are local experiences included in the stay?

Some recommendations and basic stay support are included, but most hosted experiences — private dinners, calligraphy sessions, guided walks, craft workshops, and seasonal activities — are optional add-ons. Availability depends on the home, region, season, and local host participation. We will share what is available for your specific property when you inquire.

Will long-term stays or remote-work options be available?

Accepted Answer

Hikari Stays will initially focus on short and medium countryside stays so we can refine the guest experience, build trusted local service relationships, and establish reliable operations. Longer work-from-home and remote-work stays may be available by inquiry or introduced in a future phase. These may include quiet work areas where available, scenic surroundings, and extended-stay pricing.

How do I book a property?

All bookings are handled personally by our team. Submit an inquiry through our contact form with your preferred property, dates, and group size. We respond within 24 hours to confirm availability and discuss your stay in detail.

What is the minimum stay?

Accepted Answer

Most properties require a minimum of two nights. During peak seasons (cherry blossom, autumn foliage, New Year) a three-night minimum applies. Some properties have a longer minimum — this is noted on each property page.

How far in advance should I book?

Accepted Answer

We recommend booking at least 2–3 months in advance for most stays, and 4–6 months for peak seasons. Our properties are limited by design — we only offer six homes — so availability is genuinely limited.

What is your cancellation policy?

Accepted Answer

Cancellations made 60 or more days before arrival receive a full refund. Between 30–59 days, 50% is refunded. Within 30 days of arrival, no refund is available. We strongly recommend travel insurance for international guests.

What is an Akiya home?

Accepted Answer

Akiya (空き家) literally means "empty house." Japan has over eight million of them — traditional homes abandoned as rural populations declined. Many are hundreds of years old, built with hand-hewn timber, clay walls, and thatched or tiled roofs. We find the finest examples, restore them with local craftspeople, and share them as extraordinary places to stay.

Are the properties fully equipped?

Yes. Every property has been carefully restored with modern comforts — full kitchen, hot water, heating, high-quality bedding, and reliable WiFi — while preserving the original architecture. You will find irori hearths, engawa verandas, and shoji screens alongside everything you need for a comfortable stay.

Are the properties private? Will I share with other guests?

Every Hikari Stays property is exclusively yours for the duration of your stay. You will never share a property with other guests. This is a fundamental part of our philosophy — these homes deserve to be experienced as homes, not hotels.

Question 13

Is there a caretaker or host on site?

Accepted Answer

Each property has a local caretaker — typically a member of the village community — who is available by phone and can visit if needed. They are not present during your stay, but they are close by. Before arrival, we provide a detailed guide to the property and the surrounding area.

Question 14

How do I get to the properties?

Accepted Answer

Most properties are accessible by a combination of Shinkansen and local train or bus, followed by a short taxi or car journey. We provide detailed arrival instructions for each property, including the nearest station, local taxi contacts, and driving directions. For some properties, renting a car is strongly recommended.

Do I need to speak Japanese?

Not at all. We provide all arrival instructions, local guides, and emergency contacts in English. Our team is available by phone and message throughout your stay. That said, learning a few phrases of Japanese is always appreciated by local communities.

Is a car necessary?

For most properties, a car significantly enhances your experience — allowing you to explore the surrounding countryside, visit local farms and sake breweries, and reach onsen that are not accessible by public transport. We note on each property page whether a car is recommended or essential.

What makes Hikari Stays different from other rental platforms?

Accepted Answer

We are not a platform. We are a small team that personally finds, restores, and curates each home. We work only with properties we believe in deeply — homes with genuine history, restored with local craftspeople, in villages that deserve to be visited. Every booking is handled by a human being. We know each property intimately.

Can you arrange local experiences — cooking classes, sake tastings, etc.?

Yes. We have relationships with local farmers, sake brewers, potters, and craftspeople in each region. We can arrange private experiences — irori cooking lessons, sake brewery visits, indigo dyeing, rice planting, and more — for guests who want to go deeper. Mention your interests when you inquire.

Are the properties suitable for families with children?

Accepted Answer

Several of our properties are well-suited to families — particularly Yuki-no-Ma and Hoshi-no-Sato, which have multiple bedrooms and outdoor space. Traditional Japanese homes do have features that require care with young children (open irori hearths, low furniture, sliding screens). We will advise on the best property for your family when you inquire.

How does Hikari Stays support local communities?

Hikari Stays is being designed to keep more economic benefit inside the communities where homes are restored. Where appropriate, local residents and businesses may be invited to support housekeeping, caretaking, maintenance, guest assistance, guided walks, food experiences, cultural workshops, transportation, and seasonal activities. The goal is to create respectful, as-needed local earning opportunities while protecting the quiet rhythm of village life.

Will Hikari Stays bring in outside workers?

The goal is to rely on local participation whenever possible and appropriate. Some specialized work may require outside professionals — especially for restoration, compliance, safety, or technical needs — but day-to-day services should be supported locally whenever the right local partners and legal structure are available.
